Medication Reminder & Tracker — Final Year Project

A requirement engineering study applying User-Centered Design (UCD) to specify a medication reminder and tracker system for elderly individuals and their caregivers. Conducted at Pusat Jagaan Warga Emas Kaseh Bonda, the project addresses real-world challenges of medication non-adherence among elderly users with low technology literacy.

Research Objectives

• Identify requirements through semi-structured interviews with 3 caregivers managing 1-10 elderly residents.
• Analyse requirements using UCD — developing 3 detailed caregiver personas via Pathy's and Acuña's methods.
• Validate design against requirements using storyboard walkthroughs, Figma prototype evaluation, and SUS (System Usability Scale) scoring.

Key Findings

• 9 themes identified from interviews — including elderly forgetfulness, inconsistent reminders, high caregiver workload during peak hours, and low elderly tech literacy.
• 11 functional requirements and 7 non-functional requirements derived and prioritised by severity, frequency, and usability relevance.
• Critical requirements include automated reminders (FR4), missed medication alerts (FR7), caregiver-assisted confirmation (FR11), and simple YES/NO intake confirmation (FR6).
• Prototype validated by caregivers — SUS results confirmed acceptable usability level before development.

My Contributions

• Conducted all requirement elicitation interviews and performed thematic analysis independently.
• Developed 3 data-driven caregiver personas using Cooper's methodology, grounded in real interview evidence.
• Created use case diagrams, domain class diagrams, and activity flows using Draw.io.
• Designed high-fidelity Figma prototype and conducted walkthrough + SUS validation with caregivers.
• Produced full SRS documentation following Linear RE Process Model adapted from Kotonya & Sommerville (1996).

Methodology & Tools

Amal Valley Organization Information System (AVIS)

A full software development lifecycle project built for Amal Valley Organization (AVO), a Malaysian NGO providing funeral services, community ambulance, and food bank support to underprivileged communities. Developed over 3 semesters — covering the complete journey from requirement elicitation through system design, Laravel development, and formal software testing.

Semester 1 — Requirements Engineering

• Conducted stakeholder interview with AVO's project coordinator, identifying pain points in their manual WhatsApp-based registration and communication workflow.
• Co-authored the full Software Requirements Specification (SRS) v2.0 — personally responsible for UC000 (Manage Account), UC100 (Login), UC800 (Evaluate Transport Request), and UC1000 (Generate Report).
• Designed Use Case Diagrams, System Sequence Diagrams, Activity Diagrams, and Domain Class Diagram using Draw.io.
• Defined 3 user roles (Project Manager, Volunteer, Beneficiary) with distinct access levels and income group classification (B40, M40, T20).

Semester 2 — System Design & Development

• Produced Software Design Description (SDD) — translating SRS requirements into detailed system architecture and design specifications.
• Developed core system modules in Laravel covering account management, beneficiary evaluation with document upload (PDF), transport request and assignment workflow, and automated PDF report generation.
• Implemented role-based access control ensuring Project Managers, Volunteers, and Beneficiaries each access only their permitted features.
• Built transport pricing logic based on income group, vehicle type, and distance — with B40 beneficiaries receiving free service.

Semester 3 — Software Testing

• AVIS was independently tested by another group who produced STR and STD for our system — simulating real-world Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V).
• Our group conducted formal software testing for a separate system — producing both Software Test Description (STD) and Software Test Report (STR) documentation.
• Applied black-box testing techniques, verifying functional requirements against expected system behaviour across all use cases.
• Experience gained on both sides of the testing process — as the system being tested and as the independent testing team.

Key System Features

• Volunteer and beneficiary registration with document upload and eligibility evaluation by Project Manager.
• Activity management with 24-hour restriction rule — create, update, cancel enforced by system.
• Transport request, evaluation, and vehicle assignment workflow with income-based pricing.
• Timestamp-filtered report generation auto-downloaded as PDF.

Tech Stack

Sips & Bites Online Ordering

A full-stack café ordering platform built as an academic group project. The system supports two types of users — customers and staff — each with their own portal, session management, and profile features backed by an Oracle database.

My Role & Contributions

• Designed and implemented the customer profile page — displaying live data from Oracle DB via JSTL SQL queries.
• Built the Edit Profile feature using JSP forms, servlet handling, and PreparedStatement SQL updates.
• Developed the staff profile portal with session-based login validation and edit functionality via EditProfileStaffServlet.
• Implemented customer management for staff — full CRUD (add, edit, delete) with JSON-based data fetching for modal pre-fill.
• Designed the UI using custom CSS with a warm café aesthetic — responsive layout with modal-based forms.

Tech Stack

AirQM — Smart Air Quality Monitor

An IoT-based smart air quality monitoring system designed to detect and respond to indoor environmental conditions in real time. Built using an ESP32 microcontroller with Wi-Fi capability, the system continuously measures CO₂, temperature, and humidity, triggering automated responses when thresholds are exceeded.

Key Features

• Real-time monitoring of CO₂ (MQ-135), temperature and humidity (DHT11) at 5-second intervals.
• Automated servo motor opens a window when CO₂ exceeds 1000 ppm.
• LED indicators simulate fan activation above 35°C and dehumidifier above 60% humidity.
• AI-based prediction engine forecasting future air quality trends from past sensor data.
• 16x2 LCD display for local real-time readings.
• Cloud-based web dashboard (Antigravity) with MySQL storage for historical analysis.

My Role & Contributions

• Designed and wired the full circuit including ESP32, sensors, servo, LEDs and LCD.
• Wrote the complete Arduino/C++ firmware for sensor reading, actuator control and Wi-Fi transmission.
• Developed the web dashboard and integrated AI prediction module.
• Conducted both hardware and software testing and documented findings.
